Capacity Building Project for Farmer’s Organizations to Support the Development of Food Value Chain in ASEAN Countries

Funded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries of Japan, the CBF Project aims to build win-win relationships between ASEAN farmers and food companies to expand locally by improving the capacity of promising farmers' organizations.

5 Target ASEAN Member States

Running from May 2021 to March 2024, the CBF Project is implemented in 5 countries - Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

Brunei Darussalam

Ready-to-eat (RTE) salad is identified as top of the line product that can be explored in manning the gap between Crop and Agrifood Industry. However, 8 out of 9 vegetables found in the RTE salad sold in Brunei’s market were imported. Through the CBF Project, Brunei is looking to expand its local vegetable farmers’ capacity in developing their own RTE salad to compete in the market.

Cambodia

Accounted for approximately 26.7 % total GDP of Cambodia, agriculture sector remains to hold one of the utmost importance in Cambodia’s economy. CBF Project in Cambodia attempts to answer the demand for safe and nutritious food in the country by supporting the development of smallholder farmers and Agricultural Cooperative in Kandal Province.

Malaysia

Harumanis mango is the prima donna of the Perlis State of Malaysia - registered under the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia as “Mangga Harumanis Perlis” in 2011. Recognizing the potential of its high-profit return, CBF Project in Malaysia endeavors to support the Harumanis Perlis Enterpreneur Cooerative members in consistently producing high-quality mangoes in the quantity that meets market demand.

Philippines

The majority of the population in Benguet Province of the Philippines engages in farming and small-scale production. Named as the top vegetable-producing province in the region, farmers in this area are still facing difficulty in finding stable market destinations and large-scale institutional buyers. In the CBF Project, 3 Farmers Cooperatives from Benguet are seeking to develop its bargaining capacity through clustering and consolidation approach.

“As we search for a less extractive and polluting economic order, so that we may fit agriculture into the economy of a sustainable culture, community becomes the locus and metaphor for both agriculture and culture.”
