Project Background

empowering the production of local ready-to-eat (RTE) salad to fulfill rising market demand

In 2007, the Government of Brunei Darussalam consented to the Wawasan Brunei 2035, in which Brunei Darussalam stated its aspiration to be a nation known throughout the world as a country with a dynamic economy and resilience, with income per capita within the top 10 countries in the world. The Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism of Brunei Darussalam believes that growth in output of primary resources and tourism sectors will become a significant contributor to GDP growth, which could be achieved by encouraging investment both from domestic and foreign sources, with a focus on increasing productivity, the use of high technology, and fulfilling both local and export market.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Agri-food (DOAA), under the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism of Brunei Darussalam, agri-food Industry in Brunei was recorded to have the highest annual growth rate between 2015-2019 with a 4.56% annual growth rate compared to the crop industry, with only 0.25% annual growth. Hence, the crop industry could benefit through the continuous product developments in the agri-food industry.

Ready-to-Eat (RTE) salads are identified as the top-of-the-line product that can be explored in manning the gap between Crop and Agri-food Industry. In Brunei Darussalam, there has been an increase in demand for RTE salad due to its convenience and the increased health awareness in the community.

However, even though the local farmers are capable of producing vegetables for RTE salad, it was found that more than 80% of vegetables in RTE salad sold in Brunei’s market were imported. This is due to the local farmers having minimal access to funding for machinery and technologies.

Therefore, the CBF Project in Brunei Darussalam plans to introduce and transfer the knowledge of RTE salad production through a series of short courses, training, sharing of experiences from experts as well as the introduction of food processing and packaging technologies for RTE salad. The project is intended to increase the vegetable production of local farmers through the diversification of their products. By adding value to their products, they will be qualified into producing RTE vegetables and furthermore, produce RTE salads to meet local demands and eventually penetrate the export markets.
